What happened to the "christians" who died prior to Christ?

If Christ had to die in order for people to be atoned for their sins and enter the kingdom of God then what exactly happened to all the imperfect good guys in the old testament? Did they miss the cutoff? Did they go to hell? Was everyone in the holy waiting room of purgatory until the time of Christ? If so, is purgatory now obsolete?
