Soot in a chemical reaction?

Soot on the bottom of the crucible is carbon. Extra carbon on the bottom of the crucible would increase the m in the final weighing. This would lead you to believe that the carbon being weighed was actually oxygen incorporated in the compound of magnesium and oxygen. See if this helps.
