No fish cycle or with fish cycle?

i cant decide whether to cycle my 10 gallon tank with fish or without i dont wanna buy a big thing of ammonia then use like 1/1000 of it but i dont want to buy hearty fish and use them to cycle as i have heard that it can cause affects in decreasing the fish life expectancy or cause gill damage? which one is faster which one is more expensive which one is less of a hle?
