How do you feel when a hardcover book you love gets damaged?

I feel guilty to myself then. But I do something to every hardcover books I love. Why don't you do something to protect it? like cover it with something else, maybe transparent-hard-plastic (for example). or to make the cover book still has the shape, I usually line them with transparent tape along edge side. like that so it won't get creased and folded.
